Shanxi province, also known as "Jin", is situated in central China, midstream of the Yellow River, and west to the Taihang Mountain. It covers an area of 156,000 square kilometers and has a population of 33.55 million. There are 119 counties governed by 11 cities of prefecture-level. Shanxi has a continental climate in North Temperate Zone with a clear alternation of four seasons. The major territory of Shanxi is above 1,000 meters in altitude and 2/3 of the province is covered by the mountain area and the hills.

There are now 75 institutions of higher learning in Shanxi，with about 12,000 postgraduate students, 407,000 undergraduates and junior colleges student，466,000 secondary technical school students. There are 216 scientific research units with a scientific and technological staff of 1,300,000. Many breakthroughs have been made in researches in information technology，biological technology，new material technology，advanced manufacturing technology and clean coal technology and other fields.
